saying goodbye to a man we never knew

Last Monday, I awoke to a text on my phone: “doc passed away”. I can’t say that I was shocked, sad or that I felt anything other than a tight, heavy ball in my stomach for the people his passing would affect. Namely, my stepmother – she is the only immediate family member surviving. (There are other family members surviving, but they were not ever a part of our lives.)

To be clear, Doc is my stepmother’s father, so technically my stepgrandfather. To my knowledge he only has one biological grandchild (whom I don’t believe I’ve ever met); there is one other stepgrandchild besides myself and my sister, but I don’t believe we’ve ever met him, either.

Are you beginning to understand the title yet?

Remembering Grams

5 generations (from right to left: grams, grandma, me, elias, dad)

Earlier this year we lost my moms’ mom and I am truly heartbroken to say that earlier this week, we lost my great-grandmother. She was 92 and lived a very full life.

Grams was one of nine children, seven of whom she outlived. She had four children, three of whom she outlived – my grandmother (dads’ mom) is her only living child. She was able to watch her 10 grandchildren grow well into adulthood, most of her great-grandchildren reach adulthood and even live to see her great-great-grandchildren. The last time I saw her, she was able to hold Elias and I was blessed to get a video of it.

Grams holds a special place in my heart because I feel that I had an opportunity to experience life with her like none of her other great-grandchildren. When my mom and dad divorced, dad lived in Grams’ basement until he was able to move into his own apartment so my sister and I also lived there every other weekend because of custody arrangements.

This past Saturday was my grandmother’s memorial service. Her passing still doesn’t seem like reality to me; I keep wanting to pick up the phone and dial her number and it always takes me a minute or two to remember that she’s not there to pick up.

My outfit was well received – I was constantly being that so and so loved my hat and where did I get it and that I looked so good for being six months pregnant. The dress itself has been worn to so many functions since I bought it. For reference, I’m wearing an XS/S – the same size I was wearing before becoming pregnant – so I highly recommend it for your next staple piece.
