Friday Favorites: Fall Activities Edition

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAPumpkin Picking Outfit

Another Friday Favorites post featuring all things Fall? Yes. Plot twist: this Friday Favorites is dedicated to all the things I love to do during Autumn. I have waited all year for this!

Corn Maze
Growing up, my mom took us every year and it’s definitely a tradition I will continue on with my own kids some day. It started out all together and as we grew older we started splitting in to teams as a competition to see who could finish the fastest, collect all the puzzle pieces, etc. Now that the two oldest of us are married, the teams typically are my mom and stepdad vs my husband and I vs my two younger siblings. It’s a great active way to spend a crisp afternoon!

Pumpkin Patch
Also something my mom did with us every year. Fun fact: we’re still going to the same we have gone to for 25+ years. Bonus: the same man who drove us when we were little still drives the tractor that hauls people out to the patch. We all love to spend the afternoon wandering around the fields, taking photos and buying candy at the country store on the farm. Even though I’m married and moved out now, we somehow all end up at the pumpkin patch on the same day!

Skyline Drive
We live in one of the most beautiful places in Virginia – the Shenandoah Valley. We are literally surrounded on all sides by mountains and, I’ll be honest, when we go on vacation the first thing I think about is how weird it is to not see mountains. We like to pick a weekend in October (you can actually use this site to help determine when the peak leaf times are), grab some snacks and a pumpkin spice latte and just drive.

Booing
Okay, so this one is a little weird and probably a little nervewracking for the people you end up booing, but it’s totally worth it, I promise! You basically fill up a couple bags with small candy, grab a group of people and load up in a car. Pick a house to boo, keeping the car running and have a designated runner to run up to the house, leave the bag, ring the bell, run back to the car and drive! It’s basically a friendly, festive drive by and it is so incredibly fun! The best part is, the people you boo are instructed (by way of a friendly ghost instruction sheet attached to the bag) to boo one of their neighbors, so you can end up with a whole neighborhood that’s been booed. For further instructions, read this site.

Baking
Late summer is when I start to really feel the need to stay in the kitchen ALL THE TIME. I’m always busy whipping up muffins, cookies, pies, soups and roasts to name a few. 🙂 Some of my favorite fall recipes include: White Chocolate Pumpkin Snickerdoodles, Cheeseburger Chowder, Pumpkin Bread (duh!) and Buttermilk Biscuits (see recipe below) and Sausage Gravy.

Buttermilk Biscuits
I have been using this recipe for years without fail, but for the life of me I can’t remember where I found it.

1 1/2 cups flour
1 1/2 tablespoons sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 stick cold butter, cut into cubes
3/4 cup buttermilk

Preheat oven to 425 F and spritz a baking sheet with cooking spray.

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt until well combined.

Drop butter cubes into flour mixture and lightly toss them until coated. Using a pastry blender, cut the butter into the mixture. Add buttermilk and, using a fork, gently fold it into the flour mixture until just moist. The resulting dough will be very sticky and lumpy.

Liberally flour a workspace and turn out dough. Fold the dough over itself a few times – it should quickly come together into a mostly smooth shape.

Pat out into a rectangle shape, roughly 1/2 inch thick. Using a knife, cut dough into 8 equal pieces and place them onto the baking sheet.

Bake 12-15 minutes or until the biscuits are golden brown.

And that’s a wrap! What are some of your favorite fall activities?

Halloween is just around the corner which means I’m practically bursting at the seams for everything festive! This week I’ll be doing a few Halloween inspired outfits to keep you in the spirit. Round one: Jack Skellington.

And before anyone jumps me this church and cemetery are extremely important to me. It’s where my mom and dad got married and the cemetery itself holds multiple generations of my family – I’m talking great great great grandparents and older. I have nothing but the utmost respect for these places and take great care in showing it.

Overnight Flight Survivial

Today I am boarding my first overnight flight! In preparation, I ordered my husband and myself some items to help make our trip a little more comfortable. I just love having excuses to buy fun stuff from Amazon! 🙂

Carry On Bags
The one downside of getting a simple set of luggage is that there are not two of any size piece of luggage. I don’t know why, but it drives me nuts that although my suitcase and my husbands’ match, one is bigger than the other. I have plans to buy a second matching set so that we each have the perfect size suitcase (and when we have kids, they’ll match mommy and daddy, too!), but for now buying two matching carry ons will have to tide me over. Here are the bags I purchased.

Entertainment
My husband has ADHD. Diagnosed, unmedicated ADHD. He stopped taking his medication because as it wore off, it had extremely negative side effects and in the long run just wasn’t worth it. As he has gotten older, he manages it much better, but there are still times I want to kill him. When he drives, he bounces his leg because he’s bored; if he’s a passenger he is constantly complaining that he’s bored and how much longer. It’s a vicious cycle. Luckily, we have all the equipment we need to keep ourselves entertained while we’re awake; we each bring a laptop, mp3 player, phone and a book. I purchased these headphones specifically for our flight.

Sleeping
My husband likes to say that I can sleep anywhere, anytime. Although that statement is 100% true, if my head is not supported, I CAN NOT SLEEP. So I took this opportunity to buy two much needed travel pillows so I’m not a total witch when we land. 🙂 Additionally, I like to bring layers in my carry on because I freeze pretty much everywhere we go. This flights’ layers include: tank top, pullover sweater and a poncho (ponchos or shawls are good substitutes for blankets!).

Skin Care
Because our flight is leaving late (8:35pm) and we’ll be in the car pretty much all day getting to the airport, I am wearing absolutely no makeup. I know after all that time, I will not be in the mood to go through my entire routine, so for you couple strangers who actually care, Spongebob said it best: I’m ugly and I’m proud!

Clothes
Overnight flights are not the flights you want to be wearing jeans and heels on. I don’t care how cute you look, it’s ridiculous. I picked up a pair of joggers, this super cute sweatshirt and a pair of compression socks to be as comfortable as possible while I’m trying to get some shut eye.

Snacks
Most of my family has some sort of anxiety/paranoia issue and I will be the first to admit I am one of them. It’s nothing to be ashamed of – my belief is that 100% of the population has an anxiety disorder on some scale about something. One of my things airport security. I fully understand that I’m not doing anything anyone should be worried about and that these ladies and gentlemen are doing their job to keep everyone safe, but they scare the crap out of me! I don’t particularly like to bring snacks for this reason and we usually grab something in the after security shopping areas to bring on board. Call me a scaredy cat or whatever, it’s just one of those things. 🙂

The Morning After
You’re in another country (or back in your own)! What’s the first thing you want to do? EAT SOMETHING! For me, travel is a huge energy drain. As I like to tell my husband, “I don’t travel well”. Which sort of makes me sound like a sandwich, but hey. I will be the first to admit, I have issues when it comes to getting where I want to be, but there are steps I take to make it as pleasant for myself and everyone else as possible. When you step off the plane, find a bathroom and follow your typical morning routine: use the restroom, wash your face, brush your teeth and hair and get changed into street clothes. (Since we’re getting in a rental and driving for two hours, I’ll be doing my makeup in the car.) Secondly, finally and probably the most important tip: sit down and eat breakfast. I don’t care if it’s Burger King in the airport or you want to drive fifteen minutes down the road to a cafe, but order something, sit down and just unwind. This is the perfect time to really “start” your vacation.

Did I miss something? What are your tips?

It’s beginning to feel like fall! After two weeks spent in the 80s, it has finally started to cool down around here. Sweater time!

The only downside is that the weather has changed so drastically in such a short time that I’ve been feeling pretty under the weather lately. It’s also been a super busy week getting ready for Ireland, prepping for Halloween and not to mention my weekend was super packed with my siblings spending the whole weekend with us, two birthday dinners and a third non-birthday dinner as well. Whew!

The sweater is a Loft Goodwill find (under $4!) and I have been dying to use this tote since I bought it a few months ago – I just knew it was perfect for fall! And how gorgeous are those leaves?!

I have been such a horrible blogger lately – not checking my site, not keeping up with my posts. Life has just gotten SO incredibly hectic this past week or so. We’ve had a lot of family events, I’ve been trying hard to get the house decorated for Halloween (and cleaning in the process before heading off to Ireland), last minute details for our trip and to top it off, I’m not feeling much like myself.

Moving on. This outfit is perfect for those hectic weeks. It’s simple, comfy but still classy and sophisticated. Bonus: it makes me feel a lot better when I’m having a not-so-up-to-it day.

This past weekend we went to the pumpkin patch. It’s the same pumpkin patch I went to with my mom and dad when I was itty bitty and the same guy still drives the tractor that takes you into the field. It’s very nostalgic for me. We go every year, ride up to the field, take pictures, pick some pumpkins and buy some candy at the country store on the farm. It’s one of my favorite things to do in the fall.

I have been dying to wear this top since I got it a couple months ago, knowing full well I wouldn’t until fall arrived and this was the perfect occasion! Yes, I wore my boots into the pumpkin field and you know what? I did not wobble or trip or feel stupid once – they are really that comfortable. I’m just as shocked as you are. 🙂 And aren’t these earrings super cute for fall?! My dad bought them for me on a trip a couple years ago and I have never worn them! They remind me of indian corn, so fall was the perfect time to give them a go.

I try not to think about our wedding day. Don’t get me wrong, it was the best day of my life, but think about all the details and the stress I was under gives me a mini panic attack. However, today is our anniversary and I will remember. As much as I give myself hives thinking about the hurricane and the little things that I had no control over, it all goes away when I think about the underlying meaning of our wedding day.

We’re married. At the end of the day, that’s all that matters. We have experienced so much together and there is not a single person I’d rather be jumping in feet first with. My husband is the most amazing man I have ever met. I am so blessed to have someone who truly completes me and has helped me create a life I never thought I’d have. He allows me to be a stay at home wife (and one day a stay at home mommy), focus on what’s important to the two of us and to go on trips I’d never be brave enough to take myself.

My husband is a million things to me, none of which I could ever put in words accurately enough to even begin to cover it. He is my logic and my comedy, my strength and my weakness, my greatest support and my most honest critic, my protector and my encourager. Without him, I wouldn’t know what to do.

Our first year of marriage has been full of adventures. We spent our honeymoon in the Dominican Republic, we bought our first house and in two weeks we will be heading to Ireland for nine days. This year has just flown by and I am truly looking forward my second year as a “Mrs”!

Almost all of our wedding was DIY. From the flowers, to the cakes and pies, to the signs and placecard holders, we did it all! If you all are interested in a more detailed DIY wedding write up, I’d be happy to do it! Just let me know.
